This weekend I return to the old stomping ground in Toronto to help my folks move to their new house and play some shows at a couple cool venues. I’m really looking forward to seeing some old friends, having a drink (or five) and catching up on old times, face to face.
It seems, lately, that the social networking websites that we all love (and hate) just haven’t been filling the space in my life like an encounter with true friends, up close in the flesh, will do. There’s something about gathering around a big table in a dark pub and bantering about old times over a few pints of beer that brings back a deeply nostalgic feeling. I’m thinking that it’s a good time for this kind of interaction…
Tuesday, January 29th, I’ll be sharing the bill at the Free Times Cafe with acoustic-blues player Aaron Garner from Collingwood. Aaron has an edgy, but mellow acoustic sound and a calendar that is loaded with gigs across Ontario. He’s shared the stage with members of Our Lady Peace and The Tragically Hip and recently released a live album There & Back, recorded at the Gayety Theatre in Collingwood with members of Big Sugar and Superstack. The CD is available for sale at his website.
On Thursday, January 31st, I’ll be opening up the evening for Bill Wood (ex-Eye Eye) at Graffiti’s in the heart of Kensington Market (I love this venue!). A former Juno award nominee, Bill’s sixth career album Take It was co-produced by himself and features artists such as Bob Egan of Blue Rodeo & Wilco fame. Bill captures an honest roots-rock and country sound in his new recordings.
I look forward to playing with both of these guys.
